Berlin Germany /

The president of the German Olympic Association of Berlin, Richard Meng, and the managing director of the European Athletics 2018 of Berlin, Frank Kowalski, have suggested that Berlin and Tel Aviv should propose a joint bid to host the Olympic Games in 2036.

“It is a vision, nothing more,” they wrote in a joint article this Saturday to the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper. Meng and Kowalski said that 2036 is a possible candidacy and it would be “a really difficult date for Germany after the Nazi Games from 1936“, but which could also be seen in reverse and could serve to show what has changed and what still needs to change.

“Then, why not send a strong and brand new signal of peace and reconciliation in 2036? A signal that does not suppress the historical burden, but rather assumes the responsibility that derives from it? “Wrote the authors.

“Such a signal would be for Germany and Israel to run together, or more specifically: Berlin and Tel Aviv.”This would be a clear sign of how obligation is created from responsibility“they added.

The two sports leaders believe that Berlin and Tel Aviv, “two liberal and vibrant metropolises”, could be united by a “different spirit, by a perspective beyond the present.”
